Wow..The Hayloft was amazing. From booking the property to leaving has been a pleasure. We had excellent communication with Susan and a pleasure to meet as well. The property its self was lovely and clean, views were really nice. The quality of the property was excellent and the finishing touches made the stay that extra bit special. Can’t thank Chris and Susan enough, would recommend to anybody. Thank you and hope to see you again.
Loved the Hayloft. Felt very safe here in these uncertain times. Lovely views and so peaceful 26th July 2020

great walks from the front door, just what we needed thanks...Emma and Scott 16th July 2020
A beautiful tranquil little flat ideally situated to commute into Edinburgh. Park and ride is around 5 miles away or exploring local area.Extremely clean and welcoming especially the cats! Beautiful interior and countryside and beyond. Brilliant! Highly recommend.
The location is on a farm, surrounded by fields full of cows. Nice and peaceful! Ideal for driving to the park and ride for Edinburgh and an easy drive to Sterling. The flat is comfortable and has everything you need. And Susan and Christopher are very helpful and friendly.
Thanks Chris and Susan we had an amazing stay at the Hayloft - it was exactly what we needed: a stylish and incredibly comfortable apartment in beautiful quiet countryside, but still in Edinburgh and only 25mins away from the very centre of town. We loved it - we’ll be back! Christopher Response from Christopher: Thanks for your lovely review.....we welcome you back anytime Have a good summer Susan
The Hayloft Edinburgh was our first stop after leaving Australia in what was a six week tour of the UK and Europe. Without doubt the Hayloft became the bench mark to which every subsequent premises was compared. This first stop was important to our family as Christmas was to be enjoyed here. We could not have been more impressed. A Christmas tree sat in the window decorated with ornaments and lights. Festive table runners were supplied and the outside of the premises was adorned with sparkling lights. There was even homemade fruit mince pies(YUM) and a gift waiting for us. These efforts ensured that our family had the perfect Christmas. The accommodation itself is wonderful. Parking space is supplied. The rural setting is ideal and the bedrooms, bathroom and kitchen/living areas are designed with cosy relaxation in mind. Small details such as a well equipped kitchen and a deep bath round off the experience. Chris and Susan really are the perfect hosts. We loved having a Christmas drink with their family on Christmas day. The Hayloft will certainly see our family again....future visits to Scotland are already planned. The Pattersons...Canberra Australia
Hayloft was the best accommodation experience across our winter Scotland and England family holiday 2018/2019. Hayloft had good functional facilities and some homey touches of luxury too. With lovely seasonal additions like outside winter lights, a miniature Christmas tree and Hogmanay food and drink treats from hosts, Susan and Chris, we really felt we were on a festive holiday! Ultimately it was a family friendly and cosy atmosphere to return to each day of our stay. We loved it; thank you again.

Tips for other travellers Having a sturdy and reliable hire car made us feel confident travelling from Hayloft to Edinburgh and other surrounding cities and towns; even on frosty mornings and nights. We can highly recommend the Edinburgh Torch Procession on 30 December and the Biggar Bonfire on New Year’s Eve along with a lovely New Year’s Eve dinner at The Barony Restaurant; our teenage peeps enjoyed both nights out with us. Other tourist likes included Edinburgh and Stirling Castles, The Potter Trail and the National Museum of Scotland. We enjoyed Edinburgh immensely.
A wonderful stay with very helpful hosts. Thanks Chris and Susan Happy 2019. Thomson family...Melbourne Australia
The Patersons have fallen in love with the Hayloft and Scotland. We have spent the most perfect Christmas here. The Christmas decorations were great. Thanks Susan and Chris we loved our time with you. Paterson family..Canberra Australia
Lovely place, beautifully presented with fabulous walks right from the door. Thanks for the scones, eggs and sundries on arrival...they went down really well. Lucy loved her Edinburgh trip -zookeeper experience, castle, shops and spooky ghost tour on Halloween night. Thanks from us all!
We fell in love with the Pentlands. The Hayloft was amazing and perfect accommodation to warm up after a day in the Pentlands.
Fantastic stay in the Hayloft. The location is perfect! We took the girls to the Castle and to the Dynamic earth museum and also did some lovely walks in the surrounding area. Thank you for the tea coffee eggs and cake a lovely welcome
Thanks so much for making this space cosy, special and welcoming. We enjoyed quiet days, long walks, the city, museums, deep sleeps...everything. Very relaxing. October 2018
Loved the space, choice of colours and art works very relaxing. Location was perfect for our travel adventures. Thanks for coffee and biscuits and Carlyles bistro was delicious.
We have really enjoyed our stay in the Hayloft -great accommodation and location. We will certainly be returning in the future. Sept 2018
Sorry to leave we really enjoyed our stay in your lovely Hayloft. So comfortable and we will be taking some design ideas home.
Great location , a peaceful haven within easy reach of Edinburgh. Exceeded our expectations, beautiful accommodation with lovely welcome gifts, thank you.Very comfortable and well equipped and a welcome back each evening from Hobbs the cat ! We enjoyed visiting The Fringe festival , The Royal Yacht Britannia, Sunshine on Leith and Trainspotting locations in the city, a Harry Potter themed escape room and the graveyard where JK Rowling used some of the names for her books, close to the Elephant cafe where she wrote.
Eine wunderschöne Wohnung, liebevoll eingerichtet mit tollen Details. Liegt sehr ruhig und idyllisch, Edinburgh ist mit dem Zug jedoch in einer halben Stunde erreichbar
Excellent hosts who are on hand if needed. Plenty of beautiful scenery within walking distance of the Hayloft. The Kelpies and Blackness Castle are worth a trip.
Beautiful and friendly place to stay. In the country but within easy distance of Edinburgh and other central Scottish locations Beautiful walking in the Pentland Hills. The Vanilla Pod snack van at Harlaw Reservoir visitor centre at weekends serves yummy food. Sculpture at Jupiter Artland should not be missed. The Falkirk Wheel and the Kelpies is about 45 minutes away. And of course lovely, lovely Edinburgh!
Thank you for a lovely stay! Words cant capture the beauty and peacefulness of this place....we had a wonderful stay all cozied up here in this room....a slice of heaven...thanks again from Elizabeth and Janilee...travels with my Aunt from Atlanta Georgia❤
Left on Apr 8, 2018 for a stay in Apr 2018 We really enjoyed our stay in the Hayloft over Easter. The accommodation is cosy, well equipped and very comfortable. We loved being in the middle of the countryside, but still only 3 miles from the village and a major route into Edinburgh. The owners, Susan and Chris, were so helpful and accommodating which was very much appreciated. Whilst we have come to Edinburgh many, many times over the past 25 years, we are delighted to have found a lovely place to stay. Would definitely book again !
“The Hayloft was our idyllic country hideaway! An absolutely fabulous place, beautifully decorated with quirky little touches to make you smile and everything you could need for a cosy weekend in. The woodburning stove was definitely one of the highlights for us (especially with a snowstorm raging outside!) and I loved having a well equipped kitchen at my disposal. There were "goodies" to welcome us on arrival and Susan and Chris were great hosts (on hand if we needed them but otherwise happy to leave us to our own devices). We can't wait to come back!”
Thanks you for a most lovely and relaxing weekend here at the Hayloft. What an amazing place that you have made! Thank you for your generous hospitality. We have loved our time here and we will certainly return. Many thanks
5 stars Left on Mar 11, 2018 for a stay in Mar 2018 We had an amazing stay at the hayloft. The place is lovely and in a really nice location. The owners couldn't of been more helpful which really made it welcoming! Highly recommend the hayloft to everyone!
Despite arriving on the tail end of the beast from the East we couldnt have asked for a better stay...thank you so much for everything you did to make our time here so pleasant!. What a beautiful part of the country especially covered in snow. Enjoyed every minute of our time at the Hayloft.
Thank you for our wonderful stay here at the Hayloft. We all felt at home here and it was the perfect place to return to in the evening after a cold long day in Edinburgh. It has been extremely warm and comfortable, we loved everything about it and would love to return.
Excellent stay Left on Jan 23, 2018 for a stay in Jan 2018 Amazing, clean and cozy accommodation. Lovely rural setting. Susan was very helpful (especially with some lost property!). I'd definitely recommend staying here
"The Hayloft is divine: beautiful and cozy with the softest bedding and attention paid to every detail. The natural setting is stunning and you feel as if you are removed from everything and yet you are just a short drive from Edinburgh and Glasgow. Recommend very highly!"
We stayed at the Hayloft while visiting our daughter to celebrate Thanksgiving. We loved the wood stove, the heated floors in the bathrooms, and the peacefulness of the surrounding countryside. It was the perfect setting to have Thanksgiving abroad. There was even a little snow to remind our daughter of New England! The rooms are decorated with local art which blends beautifully with the exposed stone and wood. Its the ideal environment for unwinding after touring Edinburgh and the Christmas markets. Susan is a great hostess and provides extra little touches that make you feel even more welcome. We loved our stay! Response
Left on Nov 5, 2017 for a stay in Oct 2017 Really enjoyed our stay at The Hayloft, very relaxing, cosy and warm with lovely logburner. The accomodation is second to none, very tastefully decorated and comfortable beds with quality linens. Kitchen is well equipped and has room to sit at the dining table. Within easy reach of Edinburgh, we used the local train stations to get there and also to Glasgow. Perfect for walkers with the Pentland Hills outside the door!
A lovely place to stay... it exceeded our expectations Buteland Road, The Hayloft, Balerno, Scotland, EH14 7JJ, United Kingdom Date of Stay 26 Oct 2017 Helpful votes: 0/0 We absolutely loved it. Very clean modern place to stay
Perfect! Buteland Road, The Hayloft, Balerno, Scotland, EH14 7JJ, United Kingdom Date of Stay 22 Oct 2017 Helpful votes: 0/0 Beautifully converted, well equipped and comfortable for the four of us (two children 11 and 14). No sounds, apart from the nearby cows. Really lovely to have a welcome pack including 2 local beers and lovely touches such as fresh cut flowers and handmade soaps. Clearly you had thought of children too, with two giant beanbags (which we never got near!) The check-in time of midday, much earlier than we're used to, was really helpful. Just 20 minutes from the city centre meant we could get there in no time and leave the hustle and bustle to reach beautiful countryside at the end of the day.
Wonderful place to stay! We really enjoyed our Sunday morning adventures to find the Crocodile and Dinosaur :) The loft is very well designed and we were very comfortable. Really appreciated the attention to detail with all the "Little Touches" that made our stay so special.
Location Cleanliness Facilities Service / Staff 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent 5 - Excellent Would you recommend this property to other travellers? Yes Comments about this property The Hayloft was fantastic and everything we needed was to hand-loved the fresh eggs and flowers! Susan and Chris were very helpful and even gave us a lift into the village to catch the bus to Edinburgh which was very kind. We felt relaxed immediately on arrival which was down to the location and the beautifully decorated loft. Everything was immaculate! Have already recommended to several people and hope to come back for another visit. Tips for other travellers We only had 4 days and wished it had been longer but a trip to the Jupiter Artland was enjoyable, particularly the underground amethyst chamber on display and the Life Mounds. Food at the cafe was also very nice with excellent service from the staff. Lunch was accompanied by a visit from the wandering peacock called Percy
The Hayloft-what can we say? Absolutely perfect in every way! What we expected and much much more! Beautifully decorated and we felt at home immediately. Beds were fantastic and allowed for a great nights sleep. Everything required was on hand and Susan and Chris were great hosts. Would love to come back in the winter to take advantage of the log burner! Thank you for a great stay.
The Hayloft is a fantastic bolthole situated in beautiful countryside yet near enough to visit Edinburgh daily via car or train. We were there for the Fringe Festival and it was great to be able to escape the mayhem and frenzy of the city to sleep in beautiful surroundings. The apartment is finished to a very high standard with so many beautiful touches such as the painted glass light blocks, the bean bags and fleecy blankets and the local jams, eggs and beer. Beautiful grounds although sadly we didn't have time to walk locally as we were at shows all day in the city. All in all a fabulous find and we would definitely go back.
We had a brilliant time at the Hayloft. It's a home from home, very clean, comfortable with modern facilities. It's in a beautiful and peaceful location which is dead handy for trips into Edinburgh. We were made to feel very welcome by Mr & Mrs Duncan who were happy to share their knowledge about the local area. We would happily recommend a visit and would love to go back in the future.

Very comfortable, nicely presented and well located accommodation. Well located for visiting Edinburgh and surrounding area.
Was perfectly placed to travel to Edinburgh or any of the surrounding areas. The cottage itself was amazing with more than we ever expected. The hosts were very generous and kind. We will definitely returning again some time soon.
Great, well presented and appointed accommodation. Friendly and helpful owners.
Great location & amazing accommodation! We had a lovely stay at the Hayloft. Chris & Susan were excellent, from their communication throughout to their lovely little touches on arrival. They have done an amazing job renovating the property and it truly is a treat to stay in.
We have just returned from our weekend at The Hayloft and i can honestly say it was wonderful. We visited with 2 teenage daughters who had received tickets for the Scotland v Italy game at Murrayfield. This is the perfect venue to enjoy the city of Edinburgh and all of the amazing attractions and events that it has to offer but to also get out into the countryside enjoying the stunning Pentland hills. we parked our car in Balerno and relied on public transport to get around and then enjoyed a lovely dinner and drinks in the local eateries The accommodation surpassed our expectations. The beds were soooo comfortable and the girls loved the mood lightings in the bedrooms. There are so many special touches to make you feel special and the art work was stunning. We will definitely be back again to get another refresh and recharge One thing to note is the wifi is not the quickest but we actually found this a bonus as it meant we put our phones away and actually talked and listened to music
